Folklore is the second studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, released on November 5, 2003, through DreamWorks Records. While it didn’t achieve the same commercial success as her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, in markets like the United States and Australia, it performed well in several European countries, particularly Germany. The album blends world music and pop rock with elements of folk, alternative pop, and worldbeat.
Inspired by Furtado’s parents’ immigrant experience, Folklore has a more introspective and mellow tone, partly influenced by her pregnancy during its recording. The album produced five singles: "Powerless (Say What You Want)," "Try," "Força," "Explode," and "The Grass Is Green." Força was notably the official anthem of UEFA Euro 2004, which Furtado performed at the final in Lisbon.
Despite limited promotion due to DreamWorks Records being sold to Universal Music Group at the time of release, the album sold 2 million copies worldwide by 2008. It debuted at number eighteen on the Canadian Albums Chart and number thirty-eight on the US Billboard 200, selling 68,000 copies in its first week. Though it struggled commercially in North America, it found an audience in Europe, especially in Germany, where Furtado attributed its success to the album’s more cerebral nature.
