Sonic-chaos mongers Veil of Maya conjure up even more brutal metalcore tricks on their sixth album, <i>False Idol</i>. Although the earthshaking "Pool Spray" and the string-dusted "Manichee" offer up bursts of hypnotically clean vocals, the majority of the record hews toward death-infused sludge and ripping displays of technical prowess. Digital zaps give way to dizzying blast beats on "Follow Me," while twisted electronics devolve into meticulous fret workouts on "Whistleblower," and frayed metal thrashing dominates "Overthrow."
