About
Doom-soaked ambient fuels Excavation’s somber exploration of the afterlife. The Haxan Cloak’s head-spinning electronics affect the listener viscerally—just consider the way the sizzling bass frequencies and panned shrieks of “Excavation, Pt. 2” tug at the guts—while his bleak atmospheres weigh like dread upon the psyche. “Consumed” runs the cries of the damned through blockbuster-sized digital effects; “Mara” is black metal by electronic means. Only the closing strings of “The Drop” bring a silver lining to the album’s glowering black thunderheads.
