Effigy of the Forgotten is the debut full-length album by New York-based brutal death metal band Suffocation, released in 1991. The cover artwork was created by Dan Seagrave. Several of the tracks had appeared on earlier releases: "Reincremation" and "Involuntary Slaughter" were re-recorded from the Reincremated demo, while "Infecting the Crypts", "Mass Obliteration", and "Jesus Wept" appeared originally on the Human Waste EP. The album became very influential in the death metal and grindcore genre, and is credited with the establishment of many stylistic features which would come to typify the genre that came to be known as brutal death metal, such as very low vocal delivery and songs which incorporate the technique of intense complex palm muting power chord pattern, extremely fast tremolo picking, and scale movement. In contrast to many modern brutal death metal band, which are often discounted as derivative and unoriginal, many music critics praise the intricate riffs and innovative songwriting on Effigy of the Forgotten, as well as Suffocation's later work. Both this album and Pierced from Within have been re-released by Roadrunner Records as part of the Two from the Vault serie. - Released on the same day as Gorguts's Considered Dead album. - This album is dedicated to the memory of Roger Patterson.
