While Dr. John (born Malcolm “Mac” Rebennack) has 'fessed to being nervous and unprepared for his solo-piano debut, it sure doesn't show on this casual collection. The grand New Orleans piano tradition informs the ragtime tune "Dorothy," the perky boogie-woogie of "Honey Dripper," and tributes to Deep South keyboard godfathers Professor Longhair and Pinetop Perkins. The oddly zippy "Silent Night," one of only three songs featuring vocals, hits the surreal note all Dr. John fans should expect.
