About
Don't Call Me Baby is a highly successful electronic dance single—rather than a full-length album—created by the Australian music duo Madison Avenue, which consisted of producer Andy Van Dorsselaer and vocalist Cheyne Coates. Originally released in Australia on October 18, 1999, it served as the breakthrough lead release for their eventual debut studio album, The Polyester Embassy. Distributed globally through labels such as Vicious Grooves and VC Recordings, the record was conceptually themed around sassy female independence and assertiveness, perfectly capturing the late-1990s club culture zeitgeist and seamlessly crossing over into mainstream pop markets worldwide. The release is firmly rooted in the house, dance-pop, and nu-disco genres. The instrumentation is famously driven by a prominent, looping disco bassline—which samples the 1980 track Ma Quale Idea by Pino D'Angiò—layered with upbeat drum machine patterns, synthesizer sweeps, and Coates's distinctly stylized, spoken-sung vocal delivery. Because it was distributed as a club-oriented maxi-single rather than a traditional long-play record, its tracklist consisted of various structural variations and DJ remixes tailored for different environments. Key inclusions across its international physical distributions featured the original 12-inch mix, The Dronez Old School Vocal Mix, and the Alexander Purkart Meets The Plastic Park Remix. Historically, Don't Call Me Baby achieved massive commercial significance and critical acclaim within the global electronic music industry. The single reached number two on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and later peaked at number one in both the United Kingdom and New Zealand in 2000, earning a triple-platinum certification in its home country for immense sales. During the 2000 ARIA Music Awards, the release dominated its categories, winning Single of the Year, Highest Selling Single, and Breakthrough Artist – Single. A notable piece of trivia surrounding its creation is that Coates originally recorded the lead vocals merely as a guide track for another singer; however, Van Dorsselaer preferred her charismatic rendition so much that it was kept as the final, official version.
