About

The Roots’ second album—their major-label debut—established the Philly group as serious contenders among the cresting wave of jazz-rap innovators, drifting from abstract jam sessions into effortlessly elegant rhymes. Black Thought shapes his bars around bebop rhythms and live brass on “Datskat,” and beatbox freestyles weave into jazz improvisation on “Essaywhuman?!!!??!” But Black Thought and Malik B prove their lyrical prowess on “Mellow My Man”—laidback storytelling boom bap that bobs and weaves with effortless swagger.
