"Der Leiermann" original lyrics by Wilhelm Müller (1794 - 1827), German poet. Born in Dessau. Studied classical philology in Berlin, fought in the War of Liberation. After Italian travels he returned to Dessau in 1819. Influenced by Greek lyrics and folk poetry. Der Leiermann is part of Die Winterreise (1824). Franz Schubert set in 1827 Die Winterreise (D 911) into a cycle of 24 songs.
