The Bay Area indie band are as restlessly adventurous as ever on their 10th album, discovering new ways to shape rock ‘n’ roll in their own playfully eccentric image. <i>Deerhoof vs. Evil</i> crams enough hooks for a prog-rock epic into three-minute chunks, such as the opener “Qui Dorm, Només Somia,” its intricate riffs ricocheting about like birds zipping through an atrium, and the mellow “Behold a Marvel in the Darkness,” which shuffles along until its chorus bursts with thundering drums and anthemic guitars.
