About
"Damnation and a Day" (subtitled "From Genesis to Nemesi...") is the fifth studio album by the English extreme metal band Cradle of Filth. It was released on 10 March 2003 through Sony Music. It is the band's only release on a major label, as the group later moved to Roadrunner Record. The album features performances by the Budapest Film Orchestra and the Budapest Film Choir, with a combined ensemble of 101 musicians and vocalist. Its lyrical themes are partly inspired by John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost". In addition to its Milton-inspired concept, the album includes standalone tracks such as "Doberman Pharaoh", which references the band Nile, and "Babalon A.D. (So Glad for the Madness)", which was influenced by the writings of Aleister Crowley. The album marked the first Cradle of Filth release since "V Empire" to feature only one full-time guitarist, Paul Allender, following the departure of guitarist Gian Pyres before the writing and recording session. Keyboardist Martin Powell contributed both keyboards and session guitar performance. It was also the first Cradle of Filth album to feature bassist Dave Pybu, who remained with the band until 2012. Narration on the opening track of each section was performed by David McEwen, who appeared in the 2001 horror film "Cradle of Fear" and in the music video for "Her Ghost in the Fog". A cover version of Cliff Richard's "Devil Woman" was recorded during the album sessions but was not released at the time. A re-recorded version later appeared on the special edition of the band's 2004 album "Nymphetamine", with altered lyric. The recording process for "Damnation and a Day" was later documented in the band's 2005 video release "Peace Through Superior Firepower". Two DVD singles were produced for the songs "Babalon A.D. (So Glad for the Madness)" and "Mannequin". The video for "Babalon A.D. (So Glad for the Madness)" was directed by Wiz and drew visual inspiration from Pier Paolo Pasolini's 1975 film "Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom", itself based on the work of the Marquis de Sade. The video for "Mannequin", directed by Thomas Mignone, featured stop-motion animation by George Higham and was influenced by the visual style of filmmaker Jan Švankmajer. .
