About
Daily Operation marks a major advance for not only Gang Starr, but also for underground East Coast rap as a whole. The jazz inflections of the first two Gang Starr albums remain, but DJ Premier's swirling post-bop loops tighten into the claustrophobic funk chops that would become his calling card. On “The Place We Dwell” and “Soliloquy of Chaos,” Guru’s monotone voice hovers on the edges of this syncopated bedlam, relaying starkly descriptive street tales with a measured cool. This is crack-era noir over crisp, boom-bap beats.
