About
Away from their respective bands and still fairly early in their rising careers, vibraphonist Gary Burton and pianist Chick Corea reached another level of clarity and engagement in the sparse duo format. Crystal Silence was the first of three records they made as a duo in the ’70s, setting the template for a type of scaled-down intimacy in jazz that proved influential. The music is by turns contemplative and bracingly complex, the sound reverberant and glowing. Corea wrote most of the material, but Crystal Silence also showcased the beguiling compositions of Steve Swallow, then a rising force in his own right.
