The album underwent several versions under different label contracts before its official release on DreamWorks Records on May 14, 2002. Notably, an earlier version was almost completed in 1998-1999 for Sire Records, which was shelved due to the band being dropped (even though promotional copies for it exist).
A few songs were originally recorded for their unreleased self-titled album, albeit heavily reworked for "Commencement".
