About
The Crowes recorded their fifth album amid label-hopping, personnel changes, and internal strife. Such distractions would sink a less dedicated band, but By Your Side contains some of their brightest mid-career songs thanks to a backing choir and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band burnishing soulful rockers like "HorseHead" and "Only A Fool." "Heavy" registers the Otis Redding-esque swagger of the Crowes’ debut, and the title track, set to swooping guitar, churchy organ, and a massive chorus, is an ode to faithfulness they took to heart.
