About
Blunted rhythms, baroque effects, and a restless mind comprise the off-kilter cornerstones of this 23-track set by UK rap renegade Dean Blunt. Avant-electronic deviant Arca co-produces a few—our host coolly sings about going crazy over soulful drones and crying infants on "Meditation"—and DJ Escrow spits otherworldly street wisdom on the string-laden likes of "The Realness." But it's Blunt’s deadpan baritone and disorienting tales of drugs and money—laid across tracks so spare and sputtering they seem intentionally underbaked—that ensure this Madlib-gone-Cockney collage satisfies as much as it bewilders.
