Asia's third album, released in November of 1985. Astra marks frontman John Wetton's return to the band after a brief ousting and temporary replacement by drummer Carl Palmer's previous bandmate, Greg Lake, reportedly due to trouble with alcohol and acrimony between Wetton and Steve Howe, who had been ousted himself by this time as a condition of Wetton's return and replaced by guitarist Mandy Meyer. The addition of Meyer's guitar pushed the material in a hard rock/light metal direction.
Astra was not very successful, only reaching #67 on the Billboard charts, a large departure from their previous two albums: the band has blamed its lack of success on lack of promotion by Geffen. "Go" was released as a single but narrowly missed the Billboard Top 40, although it reached #5 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart. "Wishing" was released as a follow-up single, but did not chart: its b-side, "Too Late (US 1985) (opens in a new tab)", was released as a promotional single and reached #30 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart.
Following Astra, Asia disbanded and would not re-unite until recording four new tracks for the Greatest Hits album Then & Now: during this time the only track released under the Asia name was "Gypsy Soul", from the soundtrack album Over The Top - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which was essentially a Giorgio Moroder track with guest vocals by John Wetton.
